Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

01/14/2002

Question:

I have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. My symptoms include flatulence for 1 to 2 hours after eating and constipation. I was prescribed Librax which was not effective. I have tried Charcocaps, Beano, Lactaid and Gas-X but have had no relief. I have difficulty sleeping at night because of gas pains. My bowel movements have become more regular with the use of Citracel but I continue to have excessive gas that has effected my work and personal life. I would like to find an effective method to reduce the flatulence and am also curious if there is a link between another condition I have (sarcoidosis) and my digestive problems.I would appreciate any advice you could give me. (I am a 39 year old woman who has not had digestive difficulties in the past.) Thankyou

Answer:

From your description of your symptoms, it sounds like you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The only thing that doesn`t fit is having gas pains at night, which is not common in IBS. I would be interested in knowing how you were diagnosed with IBS. IBS is diagnosed by the typical symptoms but also requires some tests (usually blood tests, x-rays, and endoscopy of the colon) to exclude other problems such as colitis, infections, obstruction, etc. Has this been done? Unfortunately there are no good remedies for excessive flatulence and you have tried all the ones we usually recommend.
