Wheezing

01/14/2002

Question:

Can post nasal drip cause night time wheezing? If so, can anything be done to help the problem? Thanks.

Answer:

Post nasal drip at night can cause secondary coughing. Wheezing is more suggestive of asthma, which can be exacerbated by inflammatory sinus problems and post nasal drainage.

Allergies may cause post nasal drip, and asthma, and therefore a thorough evaluation is probably warranted. Many milder cases of asthma manifest only at night, or with certain activities, and can be effectively treated.

There are excellent medications available to treat both asthma and allergies, including post nasal drip. These include over the counter antihistamines, but antihistamines with fewer side affects as well as both oral and nasal inhalers are available by prescription.
