Exercise and Fitness

Can this really work?

02/28/2002

Question:

I was wondering, If I run everyday do you think My stomach can decrease its size, because my stomach sticks out and I was wondering if running or walking can get me a smaller stomach!

Answer:

Please refer to the question `Getting in Shape for the Summer` posted on the Exercise & Fitness panel. This question summarizes the benefit of a well-rounded exercise program.

There is no such thing as `spot reducing`, however, keep in mind that abdominal strengthening exercises will help to firm the stomach muscles, but one must be consistent in performing such exercises. Only aerobic-type exercises (i.e., walking and cycling) will help reduce unwanted body fat.
