Sciatic nerve

04/30/2002

Question:

what is the treatment for low back pain involving the sciatic nerve and have you ever heard of freezing the nerve or putting it to sleep?

Answer:

This is a very good question. Low back pain involving the sciatic nerve typically would result in significant associated single sided leg pain. These symptoms should initially be treated with non-operative management of reduced activity, anti-inflammatory medicines, and physical therapy. Freezing the nerve would cause irreversible damage. Putting a nerve root to sleep is not a treatment that I am familiar with. If non-operative treatment does not relieve the pain, then often surgery can be helpful. Contact your spine specialist for further evaluation.
