Diabetes

Who is at risk for diabetes?

04/29/2002

Question:

Who in the population is most prone to diabetes?

Answer:

There are two types of diabetes. The most common type of diabetes is Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is more common in adults than in children, and slightly more common in females than males.

Type 2 diabetes is more common in people who are overweight, are not physically active, and who have a family history of Type 2 diabetes. Certain ethnic groups have a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes, including Native American, Hispanic, African-American, and Japanese populations.

Type 1 diabetes is a totally different disease. It is more common in children than adults. Type 1 diabetes is more common in non-Hispanic whites than in other ethnic groups.
