Alzheimer's Link with Bipolar Disorder05/01/2002 |
Does a person with Bipolar Disorder have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer`s disease? Is there any link between the two?
Thank you for submitting your question. Dr. David Geldmacher from the University Memory and Aging Center has responded. "There are no clear links between bipolar disorder and the development of AD in later life. Frequently people with bipolar illness develop dementia-like symptoms in later life, like poor memory, loss of motivation, and low mood. In general, however, the clinical pattern is different from the clinical pattern of AD. I am not aware of any studies which show a higher rate of autopsy-proven AD among people with early bipolar disease." Thanks again for sending us your question.
