Bone spur/tendonitis

06/11/2002

Question:

What is a bone spur? What is tendonitis?

Answer:

A bone spur is an overgrowth of bone that occurs in an area that is usually subject to greater amounts of stress or friction. Common locations are on the heel, spine and hips although they can occur at other locations. These spurs can sometimes rub upon other structures, like tendons, and cause chronic irritation and pain. Tendinitis is an inflammation of a tendon (the structure that connects a muscle to a bone) that is caused by overuse or injury. The inflammation of the tendon causes discomfort or pain when the muscle to which the tendon is attached is used.
