Anxiety and Stress Disorders (Children)

Harmful Anxiety

06/19/2002

Question:

Over the internet I have been talking to this girl for 5 yrs. When I finally met her she said she has an anxiety disorder. She would make herself vomit when she did something wrong or cut herself badly. How can I get her to stop? Where is a treatment center that I could take her that she would feel comfortable? She is 15 yrs old.

Answer:

Well the symptoms you describe are certainly consistent with serious mental health problems, some of which may be anxiety related. Your friend should seek out a mental health professional either through her school or in the community, called a community mental health center. She should inform her parents/guardians about her need to harm herself so that they can assist her by knowing the serious nature of her problems.
