Breast Feeding

Male Infant Milk Production???

07/22/2002

Question:

My month old SON has developed a lump in his chest. It is situated behind his nipple and when squeezed (very , very gently) it leaks milk. He is breast-fed only. Can you please explain this to me.

Answer:

During late pregnancy maternal hormone levels are very high, to prepare YOUR breast for breastfeeding. These high hormone levels are enough to sometimes cause breast engorgement and milk production in a baby (male or female). This appears by the third day of life and is gone by the second week of life. Since your son is a month old, you should have him see his health care provider for an evaluation.
