Getting Diabetes after Gall Bladder removed.

08/15/2002

Question:

Is there any connection to having your Gall Bladder removed and getting diabetes?

Answer:

There is a short answer and a longer answer to this question. The short answer is "no," gallbladder surgery doesn`t cause diabetes. The longer answer includes the following: 1) people predisposed to diabetes may have some nutritional issues that also predispose them to gall bladder disease. 2) Scheduling any surgery may result in additional blood testing which may lead to the detection of diabetes that was already present. 3) The stress of surgery may bring out an underlying tendency to high blood sugars, leading to detection.
