s it Safe to Getting Off Zocar While on Atkin's Diet?

08/21/2002

Question:

I want to get off Zocor due to statins. Atkins diet brought cholesterol down from 320 to 165 along with Zocor which I have been on for 12 years. I have been on and off of Atkins diet for 3 years. Is this a good idea?

Answer:

If your weight is now at or near your ideal body weight range, it would be reasonable to have a trial off of your Zocor and recheck your cholesterol in two to three months. I would consult with your physician first, however. He/she will have much more information regarding your risk profile and may want to monitor you very closely if you decide to discontinue your medication, or may prefer to slowly wean your dose. I have seen dramatic decreases in cholesterol in my practice in patients who have lost weight on the Atkins diet!
