Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Effects of marijuana and alcohol use

12/31/2002

Question:

What are the effects, if any, of both short and long term marijuana use on libido and erectile dysfunction? If marijuana use does effect libido and erectile dysfunction can these effects be reversed if marijuana use stops? What are the effects of moderate alcohol use (2 to 3 beers per day) on libido and erectile dysfunction? If a man had several beers at dinner, for example, and then had sex several hours later, could the alcohol still effect his ability to get and/or maintain an erection?

Answer:

Alcohol use is a bit easier, for it has been studied, while marijuana is not well-studied in this area.  Short-term alcohol use can be a mood enhancer; long-term, however, it acts as a depressant. Long-term, alcohol can also affect the hormone axis in a negative way.  Marijuana is a tough one: there is not a lot of literature on this topic.
