BENIGN CYST

12/20/2002

Question:

I`m 28 years old and just had a biopsy test done. It`s a benign cyst.

I want to know what cause a cyst? and what is the percentage of women who has cyst in the US? Is it coming back again? could a cyst can later develop breast cancer? Is it ok for me to continuing on my daily work out in the Gym such as aerobic/ weight training classes? It`s still a bit tender when i do the stepping class.

Answer:

Thank you for your question. Many women worry about the origin of cysts and if they are going to turn into cancer. A cyst is a smooth round movable lump that feels like a sac filled with fluid. Cysts are most common in women in their 30`s, 40`s, and 50`s or during the years of menstruation. A cyst does not go away unless it is aspirated(removal of fluid in the sac) or removed with a biopsy. The cause is not specifically known but it is thought to be related to hormones in some way. A cyst arises from milk glands as the glandular part of the breast breaks down forming fluid pockets inside the breast tissue. Cysts do not develop into cancer nor do they increase the risk of cancer. Most women develop one or two cysts in their lifetime. Some women develop many cysts and often have recurring cysts. You should call your doctor or speak to the nurse to ask when you may continue your exercises. If your biopsy test was a needle biopsy, probably you can start your exercises. If you had an incision, The doctor will give you guidelines. If you feel a lump in your breast again, please do not ignore it thinking it is only a cyst. Women should always go the the doctor with any size of lump to make sure it is not malignant.
