Digestive Disorders

Immediate projectile diarrhea

12/16/2002

Question:

Periodically, immediately following a meal {within minutes} I have projectile diarrhea with sweet-smelling fecal material. Type of food seems not to be a common demoninator. There are times when following a social event I will try to vomit before the cramps and diarrhea occur. Could I take Imodium prophylactically for such events?

Answer:

You did not mention your age nor how often or how long this diarrhea has been occurring. In general, if these symptoms have been occurring on a chronic basis (more than a few months) or if you are over age fifty, you might want to see your doctor for an evaluation before self-treating. Imodium actually may be helpful in preventing urgency and diarrhea after meals in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, but as stated above, only your doctor can determine if that`s what you have.
