What is the cause of osteoporosis?
Bone is a living tissue in the body that is constantly remodeling. There are always areas that are being resorbed and areas where new bone is being produced. For much of our adult life those two processes are in balance so that the total amount of bone is stable. As we age, the balance shifts toward more resorption so that a net loss of bone occurs. It is not clear why that shift occurs. The decline in estrogen in women at menopause appears to accelerate the process, but many other factors are involved as well. We simply do not have all the answers yet.
