Eating Disoders by Teens

02/03/2003

Question:

What percent of eating disorders are teens?

Answer:

There are many types of eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa occur most frequently among female adolescents and young women. According to research, about one percent (1%) of female adolescents have anorexia. That means that about one out of every 100 young women have the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Bulimia nervosa is more common and occurs in about 4% of young women. The occurrence of eating disorders in men is much less common than in women. In fact, only about 10% of eating disordered persons are male.
