Breast Feeding

RA meds and breastfeeding

Is Enbrel safe to use while breastfeeding? If not, are NSAIDS (such as Naproxen Sodium) safe to use? I have RA and am off of these drugs now, but will hopefully be able to use them once the baby is born.

Etanercept, (Embrel) an antiarthritic drug should not be used while breastfeeding. Naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, Alleve) are NSAID`s. These NSAID`s are approved by the American Academy of Pediatric for use in breastfeeding mothers. There is minimal transfer of the medication into the milk. However, like all medications it should be used with caution. This especially true with Naproxen, because of the long half life, and its potential effect on the infant`s cardiovascular, renal and gastrointestinal systems. It is important to let the infant`s health care provider know that you are taking this medication, so that the risks and benefits of the medication can be weighed.
