Allergies

Skin rashes possible allergies from animals

04/30/2003

Question:

My 2yrs 10months great nephew developed a skin rashes like small patches or rough skin like tiny white heads or pimples in his left arm and the pediatrician doctor just looked at his skin and said right away if we have cats and dogs in our house. That the kid is allergic to cats and dogs. My great nephew has been with us since June of 2002 and the rashed just came out recently. Do you think the Doctor is correct or do we need to get a second opinion. Thank you very much.

Answer:

It sounds like eczema, which could be allergic or non-allergic. It is very likely to be allergic in origin if there is a strong history of allergy or asthma in the parents. If allergic, atopic or allergic dermatitis can be associated with food allergies to egg, milk, or other foods. At other times, it can accompany respiratory nasal allergies and/or asthma. It would be unusual for the cat or dog to cause an isolated skin problem, unless the child also has respiratory allergies or asthma. Because the skin condition may not be related to allergy at all, the only way to determine if it is, is to have the child skin tested by an allergy specialist.
