Urinary and Genital Disorders (Children) |
Why does my boy pee on the rug?05/30/2003 |
Whgat would cause a very bright and toilet-trained 5-year old boy to urinate in inappropriate places, such as the wastebasket or on the rug? He is loud, aggressive and boisterous--I suspect ODD. I`d appreciate any guidance. Thank You
Many children, especially those with ODD and ADHD, do not care about their voiding habits. They, in essence, have more important things to do than take time to go to the bathroom. Thus incontinence issues are relatively common in these children. If a child has associated urinary tract infections, then one needs to consider anatomic abnormalities as a cause of the wetting. Otherwise, the problem may be more behavioral in nature and often requires some form of behavioral modifications, namely positive reinforcement for proper behavior.
Furthermore, many such children may have overactive bladders whereby the bladder contracts on its own at inappropriate times. This type of bladder dysfunction often responds to medications.
The bottom line is that a carefully performed history will often elucidate the reasons why a child might be wetting and offer correct treatment options. Treatment of incontinence in children with ODD and ADHD, however, can be quite difficult and frustrating.
