Nauseous feeling before and after eating

06/10/2003

Question:

I am 5`7 and weigh 135-145. For several months now I have had no appetite. The only reason that I eat is to avoid hearing others gripe about my not eating. I have a healthy body image. I am not trying to lose weight or alter my appearance. I eat VERY little and I am completely full; however, within hours (sometimes less) I get a very nauseous feeling. I get a naseous feeling for hours afterwards. I eat relatively healthy. I do not eat fast food. I used to eat fast food but it got to the point that every time I ate it, I would be on the verge of vomiting. I have not had fast food (except a slice of pizza now and again) since January. When I cook dinner I usually make some type of grilled meat (steak or mostly chicken), a vegetable, ceasar salad and vegetables. For lunch I try eating soup, or granola bars and yogurt or even a small bowl of cottage cheese. I try to eliminate most grease and extremely “fatty” foods b/c this is what I feared was causing the nauseousness. I have actually had the nauseous feeling off and on for over a year. Is there any particular reasoning behind this.

Answer:

Thanks for your question. If you are a female, your weight is within normal limits for your height- which is good. I`m glad to hear that you have a healthy body image and are not trying to lose weight. It`s also good to know that you are trying to limit or avoid fast food and eat low fat, healthier foods. I cannot explain why you are nauseated before and after meals. If this has been going on for several months, you should seek medical attention. There may be several causes to nausea and a full feeling, but only your doctor can give you a full work up to find out why. I suggest you make an appointment ASAP. Good luck.
