Light bleeding after frequent intercourse

06/11/2003

Question:

For the past two days, I have noticed a little bleeding after my husband and I have intercourse. We have been having sex a lot more than usual as we are trying to get pregnant. My husband is also penetrating deeper as we heard this helps the sperm get closer to where they need to be. Can this be the reason for the bleeding? I am otherwise healthy and have recently seen my Gynocologist and have had no problems. Also, this light bleeding won`t get in the way of us trying to conceive, will it?? Thank you in advance for any info you could give me!

Answer:

There are various causes for post-intercourse bleeding. The most important causes to rule out are any abnormalities of the cervix such as infection or abnormal cervical cell growths. This can be ruled out by Pap smear and cervical cultures. You should have an exam to rule out other lesions. Deep thrusting intercourse and more frequent intercourse can traumatize the cervix causing bleeding. Deep thrusting isn`t necessary to deposit the sperm deep in the vagina. I can`t say that there is good evidence that bleeding will decrease your chances for fertility, but theoretically it could change the normal environment of the vagina and decrease sperm viability.
