Digestive Disorders

IBS Problems

06/18/2003

Question:

Hello. My 22 year old daughter has been diagnosed with IBS. She has a one year old daughter, and the symptoms got better while she was pregnant, however they are back with a vengence. She is 4`11, and her "normal" weight is around 115. She is now down to 99lbs. She saw a Gastroenterologist 2 months ago for a Colonoscopy, as there is alot of IBD in the family, including myself, but it showed only an easily irritated bowel, but no sign of disease. My daughter is on a small income, with no health insurance, caught between the gap of not qualifying for Federal help, but not enough to afford insurance, and bills that now top $3000.00 dollars. She is still having problems and not eating much due to the bloating, full feeling along with the constipation. She took Zelnorm*, but it caused severe diarreah. The physician said to just try Citricel and exercise, which she has with no real improvement, but the Doctor wants the existing bill reduced signifigantly, which she simply can`t do at this time, before he will see her again. I truly apologize for the length of this letter, but she seems to be getting nowhere except in more debt. I understand of course that you cannot diagnose anything in this type of forum, but if you have any IBS "management" suggestions other than what has already been tried, we would be most thankful. Thank you so much for your time.

Answer:

Weight loss, inability to eat, and fullness are not symptoms typically attributed to IBS. Therefore, although she could still have IBS, my guess is that there is something else going on. In particular the above symptoms suggest a problem of the upper GI tract or stomach. Of course more tests would be necessary to prove that. Another potential and frequent complicating issue is superimposed depression. This may be especially applicable to your daughter if her symptoms recurred in the first few months post-partum.
