Endometriosis

06/26/2003

Question:

I was recently diagnosed with an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. I had a laperoscopy done to remove te cyst and they found a "fair" amount of endometriosis. They have put me on lupron for six months along with a birth control pill. I have been on the shot for four months and just started bleeding for two weeks. Is this ok? I am also wondering what this will do for my future pregnancies. I have been pregnant before but didn`t carry full term. I became pregnant a year and a half before being diagnosed. What does this mean for my future pregnancies? Please help I am so worried I will not be able to concieve.

Answer:

First of all, abnormal bleeding while on Lupron can be expected. It is not worrisome unless the bleeding becomes heavy. Endometriosis can impair fertility, but treatments such as what you are on, do help. The treatment should not negatively effect your chances of getting pregnant, only the endometriosis can. I don`t know what your fertility history was like, but the fact that you were able to become pregnant is encouraging. You may have had endometriosis then as well, and it didn`t impact your fertility. You should finish the 6 month course of Lupron and then use the birth control pills (they diminish the rate of recurrence) until you decide to conceive.
