Lupus

Could this be lupus?

07/07/2003

Question:

I have been having joint pains and rashes. An ANA test was done which was 1:10240. My family doctor said this was very high and I needed to see a rheumatologist. I am unable to get an appointment until Aug 27. Is this likely to be lupus? Is Aug 27 too long to wait for an appointment?

Answer:

Lupus could cause this although there other medical disorders that can be associated with a positive ANA. If all you have is a rash and joint pains you may be able to wait until Aug 27th. Possibly your doctor could get some preliminary tests such as a CBC, urinalysis, and creatinine. Furthermore, if your doctor works with a rheumatologist she/he may be able to get you an earlier appointment
