Superimposed disc herniation

What is the definition and significance of "central disc herniation superimposed upon degenerative disc bulges"?

This is a degenerative or osteoarthritic disc condition involving both disc dehydration and bulging and osteophyte (bone spur) formation. This may or may not cause nerve tissue compression.
