Average height

Question:

The community health nurse was screening at my daughters school and called me to let me know she is worried about my daughters height. My daughter will be 11yrs old in dec and she is 50 in and weighs 100lbs. the nurse is concerned about her height and says she should be much taller than that. Other than shortness running in her jeans what else could be a factor? And is that really that short for her age?

Answer:

50 inches tall for an 11 year old girl is about the 5th percentile (95% of 11 year old who are `late maturers` are taller) while her weight is at the 75th percentile (25% of 11 year old girls are heavier). I would suggest that you discuss her condition and your questions with her primary care provider.
