Lack of breast soreness/PMS

11/14/2003

Question:

I am 37 years old and just had my first child about 5 months ago. I have only had 2 periods since. I breastfed for about 8 weeks.

My question is this: typically my breasts are sore about 1 week prior to starting my cycle. But since the pregnancy, I don`t have any sign of PMS except bloating. Is it normal for my PMS symptoms to change like this? Although the breast soreness was painful, I `liked` having some notice of when my period was coming on.

Answer:

Those PMS symptoms occur as the hormones that follow ovulation are decreasing. That is a good indicator that you have ovulated. The first cycles after childbirth and breastfeeding may not follow ovulation and therefore may not have the typical symptoms. First you should check the regularity of your cycles. If they are not very regular, then you could assume that predicable ovulation hasn`t occurred. If they are, then it may mean that your body`s response to these changing hormones may differ than before your pregnancy. It is possible that the breast changes that occur with pregnancy and breastfeeding have left your breasts less sensitive to the hormonal changes.
