Jogging for middle-aged women12/14/2003 02:47PM |
What is your advice re jogging for middle-aged women, as far as what`s healthy for joints? I`m 57 and have never had problems with knees, but don`t want to keep jogging too many years and set off problems. Is light jogging (i.e., 10-min miles, 3 miles, 3x per week) safe to do?
Each person reacts to jogging differently. Jogging tends to create a lot of impact on your knees and might be beneficial in moderation. I would suggest taking a day in between each run. If you begin to notice knee pain, switch to biking or swimming. The most important thing is to consult with your physician before beginning any running program. Your physician may help you determine if running is right for you and if you have the potential for developing knee problems.
