Break from the pill?

12/29/2003

Question:

I am 23 years old and I have been on ortho-cept for 9 years. I was thinking of "taking a break" from the pill for a little while. I am worried though because when I am off the pill for those 7 days of the month, my PMS comes on very very strong. If I do take a break will I be that raging bitch all the time? And is it neccessary to take a break from the pill?

Answer:

I can`t tell you how you will be this time off of the pill, but your prior history suggests that you may still have severe PMS symptoms. There is no medical reason to go off of the pill. There are many non-contraceptive benefits from remaining on the pill i.e.- decreased bleeding, pain, PMS, acne, ovarian and uterine cancer to name a few. If you are tolerating it well, there is no reason to give your body a break. This is especially true if you may suffer other symptoms because of discontinuation.
