Symptoms of Fibroid Tumors?

01/12/2004

Question:

Symptoms of a Fibriod Tumor?

Ultra Sounds have recently shown that the small fibriod tumors I have, have grown a lot in the past year. Presently there is three, with 2 inside the uterus, therefore my uterus is the size of a 10 - 12 week pregnancy. My doctor is not suggesting surgery at this time.

I have also experienced exteme fullness, pain and gaseous feeling before the beginning of some of my periods. My doctor contributed the above discomforts to my possibly beginning menopause. Also I have experienced an increase in urination. I notice a constant "bloated" feeling in my stomach and a weight gain of 3 pounds, that despite diet and excerise I can`t seem to get rid of.

Are the above common symptoms because of the fibriod tumors? What are your guidelines and recommendations for surgery? At this point I would prefer a hysterectomy. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

Some of the symptoms you are feeling are characteristic of a fibroid uterus that is large. As it enlarges, it can press on the bladder causing frequent urination. It can also cause feelings of pelvic pressure and heaviness. Some of your symptoms that occur prior to your periods are likely due to hormonal changes and not the fibroids. Recommendations for surgery in your case are for symptoms of pelvic pressure and pain or rapidly enlarging uterus (more than 6 weeks size growth in one year).
