Hepatitis B and pregnancy

01/27/2004

Question:

I have been informed that I have Hepatitis B and I am pregnant. This is new to me and I am very scared. What I would like to know is what are my chances of dieing?... and in the future is there going to be a cure?

Answer:

I have forwarded this question to the Ask an Expert section called "Infectious Diseases" to discuss the risk of Hepatitis B on your health. The answer to your questions depends on many factors that you have not provided. In general the question is if you are a Hepatitis B carrier or have active hepatitis. As far as pregnancy is concerned, the goal is to minimize the transmission of hepatitis to the newborn. At birth, the child will be given a medication called Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) and the Hepatitis B vaccine. These two measures will decrease the risk of hepatitis transmission to the baby from 30% to less than 1%.
