Prostate Cancer

Blood and discharge in the semen

02/04/2004 08:45AM

Question:

I`m 53 years old. For the last 15 months, I had frequently noticed blood and discharge in my semen. I consulted a urologist and did many lab and x-rays and the like. I was told that I have a mildly enlarged prostate and that I should not worry about the blood in the semen, rather I must take cardura all the time (one a day).

In fact, I stopped the cardura since many months, and I am very worried about the blood and I have no problems with my urine although not as normal as in younger age.

Please, your advice will be helpful and highly appreciated by me.

Answer:

Blood in the ejaculate is not uncommon and the etiology is not clear. It is not associated with malignancy. I typically treat patients with an antibiotic for several weeks and in most instances the situation clears. You may want to discuss this with your physician.
