Breast Cancer

Metaplastic bc hereditary?

02/10/2004

Question:

My mother recently died of metaplastic breast cancer. Are all types of breast cancer possibly hereditary? My mother`s family had no previous history of cancer, and in fact her mother is still alive and kicking at 95.

Answer:

Thank you for your question. Metaplastic carcinomas of the breast are groups of tumors that are made up of mixtures of epithelial and mesenchymal cells or a mixture of different types of cancer cells. Regardless of the type of breast cancer your mother had, you are at a 2.5% higher risk of developing breast cancer than a woman who has no family history of breast cancer. Approximately 1 out of 30 women will get breast cancer with no family history and 6 out of 30 will get breast cancer with a family history. Since you are at a higher risk of getting breast cancer because a first degree relative had breast cancer, it is important that you follow the guidelines for early detection of breast cancer. At age 40, every woman should have a mammogram and a clinical breast examination annually. A clinical breast exam is a breast physical exam done by a health provider. Women who have a family history of breast cancer should begin having these check-ups at an age younger than 40. Other tests should be considered as well, such as magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). Talk to your physician about your family history of breast cancer and how you might be able to lower your risk.
