Effect of maternal infection with parvo virus04/12/2004 |
My sister in law is 8 weeks pregnant and has just been diagnosed as having parvo virus. She has had a rash, severe swelling to the joints, sickness and diorhea and stomach pains also she feels fatigued. What risk is there to her and the baby? Is there any way of minimising the risk or any treatment?thankyou
Parvovirus infection in pregnancy may lead to serious issues in the fetus. Infection is most concerning in the second trimester, less so in the first and even less so in the third. Possible fetal issues include hydrops (collection of fluid in the baby) due to anemia of the fetus, myocarditis (an inflammation of the heart muscle) and fetal death. There are no known treatments for preventing fetal outcomes after maternal infection. Close surveillance of the fetus with ultrasound would be wise to assure that there has been no injury to the fetus.
