Menopause

Surgical Menopause

05/03/2004

Question:

How long exactly does menopause last? I had a full hysterectomy at 35, and now I am 45.or have I bypassed it altogether?

Answer:

If your ovaries were both removed with your hysterectomy, you had menopause at that time.  Menopause does not "last".  It is an event similar to puberty.  It is the stopping of menstrual cycles due to low estrogen levels.  The symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes or vaginal dryness,  can "last" a variable amount of time for each woman.

If both ovaries were not removed with your uterus, it might be harder to tell if you are pre- or post-menopausal.  Hot flashes can be a sign that you are menopausal, but not all women have hot flushes.  A blood test can be done if it is important to know about menopausal status.
