What are the date rape drugs?

06/14/2004

Question:

what information do you have on date rape drugs and how to recognize them?

Answer:

There are many drugs that may be used to facilitate rape. In fact, since most men (10%) or women (90%) that may fall victim are not on an actual date when the rape occurs, the more correct term for this is "drug rape" or "drug - facilitated rape". The goal of a perpetrator is to impair a person`s judgement and ability to refuse, escape, or remember what occurred. Drugs used in this manner usually all have three things in common: 1) they cause drowsiness, 2) muscle relaxation, and 3) amnesia (inability to remember events). The number of drugs that fall into this category are many, and include some of the following:

1) Muscle relaxers such as Carisoprodol (Soma), Methocarbamol (Robaxin), others

2) Drugs in the "Benzodiazepine" class, often used for anxiety conditions (Valium, Ativan, Xanax, others)

3) Club drugs such as Ketamine (tranquilizer used in pediatric and animal medicine) and GHB (illicit sedative abused for "high" or drug rape)

4) Narcotics such as Oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percocet, Tylox), Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lorcet, Lortab), Codeine (Tylenol with Codeine #3, #4, etc), Morphine (MS Contin), others

5) Marijuana

6) Ecstasy

Most of the above listed drugs cause drowsiness with the exception of Ecstasy, which causes an entactogen effect. Entactogen literally means "to touch within" and causes the user to want to feel closer to others. Ecstasy sometimes goes by the slang term "hug drug" as a result, which may then lead it to be a "mug drug" as well.

Identifying a drug that may be used to facilitate rape may be difficult as many of them are similar in form, i.e. a tablet or capsule, or clear liquid (GHB, Ketamine). The drug may be put into a drink and given to the intended victim, and if it dissolves well, may not be detectable by looking at it.

It may be more important for a person to be aware of their surroundings at all times to avoid falling victim to this type of crime. The buddy system learned as a child comes in handy as an adult as well
