Transmission Of AIDS By Using The Same Pipe

06/16/2004

Question:

I have two best friends and both are HIV positive. I share the same pipe with them, sometimes it gets hot and burns the inside of my lip. Do you think that I should get tested? How often do people contract HIV in cases like this?

Answer:

Saliva is considered a body fluid that carries minimal risk of HIV transmission (as long as the saliva is not visibly bloody). It would be prudent not to share pipes without cleaning them first, not necessarily to reduce HIV transmission, but to reduce transmission of other infections such as common colds, influenza, etc.
