ESI Cortizone Shot

08/02/2004

Question:

What are the side affects of having an ESI cortizone shot in the spine? Is it normal to have the shot more than once or twice?

Answer:

There are no common side effects of having a lumbar epidural steroid (cortisone) injection into the lumbar epidural space.  Several hundred thousand of these are performed each year for the treatment of sciatica and it is common to have repeat injections since each involves a small volume.

Minor risks include the occurrence of a temporary spinal headache, soreness at the site and a temporary elevation in blood sugar levels in diabetics.
