Lupron and severe depression

08/16/2004

Question:

I need to know if there has been any research on the use of Lupron 3.75mg injections (for endometriosis treatment) in female patients who have been clinically diagnosed with bi-polar disorder or severe depression and what if any those results or reactions would be.

Answer:

There are reports of women who suffered an increase in their depression or episodes of mania while being treated with Lupron. Having said that, these are case reports and not research. Therefore they don't tell us how likely this is to happen, or whether or not there were other factors that contributed to the episodes. For women with a history of depression or bipolar disorder, they should consult the physician treating their psychiatric disorder before starting Lupron. You should make this history aware to the doctor planning on using Lupron.
