Breast Feeding

Massage whilst breastfeeding

08/20/2004

Question:

Hello, I was wondering if you can tell me if it`s safe to receive massage whilst breastfeeding? My concern is re the toxins that are released from the body following massage and therefore the possiblity of these then being passed onto the baby via breastmilk.

If you are able to help me I would be very grateful. Thanking you

Answer:

With any muscle activity there is lactic acid production and this lactic acid is then released into the blood stream. Lactic acid is not a toxin, just a byproduct of muscular activity.

Massages generally relax you, and may actually be a benefit to you.

If you have concerns that YOU may have toxins in your body, you should discuss this with your health care provider or lactation consultant.
