Endometriosis and uteirne fibroids

08/19/2004

Question:

what is the diferences between uterine fibroids and endometriosis. if the ultrsound report showed that there is anteverted and enlarged uterus with mutiple nodules seen at the fundus, is that the sign of endometriosis or uterine fibroids?

Answer:

Fibroids are an enlargement of a segment of the muscle of the uterus. Endometriosis is when the lining of the uterus is found growing in places other than the uterus. It is not visible on an ultrasound unless associated with an ovarian cyst. Endometriosis of the uterus wouldn't necessarily show up on an ultrasound. Nodules on the uterus are more likely consistent with small fibroids.
