Urinary Disorders

NVD, hip surgery, UTI`s & possible treatments

10/07/2004

Question:

What are the possible treatments for a 91 year-old woman who has neurogenic voiding dysfunction which I believe is a side effect of two hip surgeries? She currently has had an indwelling Foley catheter for 6 weeks. She also had/has chronic UTI`s for which she was hospitalized at leasts three times. The primary care physician is unfamiliar with this specialty.

Answer:

She needs an evaluation to assess bladder function to determine why she is unable to void and to develop a program (if possible) to hopefully get her to do so. Most Board Certified urologists can cary out the proper evaluation, and I suggest she consults with an appropriate physician.
