How many people died in the last year who smoked?
According to the Center for Disease Control, cigarette smoking causes an estimated 440,000 deaths, or about 1 of every 5 deaths, each year (Fact sheet: February 2004). This estimate includes 264,000 men and 178,000 women. This estimate also includes 35,000 deaths from secondhand smoke exposure.
More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. Smokeless tobacco use is not harmless; it increases the risk for developing oral cancer.
A really good website for facts about deaths and illnesses related to tobacco use, including smokeless tobacco, is the Center for Disease Control: www.cdc.gov
