Breast Cancer

Foamy macrophages?

11/03/2004

Question:

Hi, I found a palpable mass in my right breast, had a mammogram and ultrasound which showed a 2cm cyst with a collection of other cysts. Since it was painful, my Gyn did an aspiration of the cyst and sent it for cytology. The cytology results came back "numerous inflamatory cells with foamy macrophages, no malignant cell is seen". I am an RN at the hospital where my aspirate was sent and the MD knew i would see the results before him, so he told me to call him if anything is abnormal. Problem is, even after extensive research, im not sure if this is anything too be concerned about. Would appreciate any information on these results as i would hate to call him if it is nothing out of the ordinary. Thank you very much!!!

Answer:

This is just a benign cyst. You will need a followup in 6 months for a physical exam and a repeat mammogram in one year.
