Pregnancy

Saline Nasal Spray

11/22/2004

Question:

Before I was pregnant I used a saline nasal spray for my dry nose about 2 times a day. Besides Sodium Chloride it also has Phenylcarbinol and Benzalkonium Chloride as preservatives. It also contains disodium phosphate and monosodium phosphate. I have been using it about 3 times a week during my first trimester but want to make sure it is okay to continuing using and how often. Thank you

Answer:

This is probably a safe medication to use. It is always best to eliminate any unnecessary exposure in pregnancy so you should weigh the benefit versus the risk of using the nasal spray.
