Breast Feeding

Adverse effect of pumping breastmilk

My boy is 6 months old and I have been pumping breastmilk for him from day 1. I seem to retain a lot of water and puffed up all over. Also I have a history of anemia. I almost passed out couple of times while pumping. Is pumping detrimental to my health?

You have an interesting question but it does not fall within my scope of practice. I strongly encourage you to see your health care provider and discuss this problem with them. Pumping should not cause you to retain water or to pass out and I suspect this may be related to your anemia--however, it is essential that your doctor or nurse practitioner evaluate this problem for you as soon as possible.

Congratulations on providing breast milk for your baby and giving him this good start.
