Scarlet Fever and Infertility

02/08/2005

Question:

My husband had Scarlet fever as a child, and as his mother says, he is most likely sterile, is that true? Does Scarlet fever cause infertility in men? or in my husband for that case?

Answer:

Complications of Scarlet Fever usually are related to the heart and kidney.  Mumps can cause an inflammation of the testicles (orchitis) that could affect future fertility in men.  If there are any concerns, you could always have a semen analysis performed to make sure that everything is okay.
