Adult skin scars easily

02/08/2005

Question:

I have always had combination skin that scars easily. Although I don`t break out as often as I used to, I still get red/bumpy hivey type pimples a few times a week. I am 38 and also have wrinkles around my eyes and mouth (laugh lines/crows feet, etc). What is the best type of skin product to use on skin like mine? I`m tired of itchy/bumpy/wrinkly skin. I just feel like my face looks unhealthy and weathered.

Answer:

If you have persisting acne or acne-like lesions, the use of a topical retinoid is indicated.  Not only will that help your acne but may reverse some of the fine wrinkles that you have developed as a result of sun exposure over the years.  I would see your physician and begin using retinoids and non-acne-producing moisturizers; as well as sunscreens with an SPF (sun protective factor) of 30 or greater.  Be sure that the sunscreen you buy blocks both ultraviolet light A and B.  Your board certified dermatologist can help you make the right decisions.

Good luck!
