Building muscle02/28/2005 |
how long does it take to build muscle? How much does a muscle cell burn compared to a fat cell. Or pound per pound?
Building muscle depends significantly on the individual and the training program of the individual. However, a recent article in the European Journal of Physiology (2000; 81, 3, 174-180) reported significant increases in muscular thickness did not occur until four to six weeks into training.
According to studies by the American Council on Exercise, one pound of lean muscle can burn 35 to 50 calories per day, whereas one pound of fat only burns 2 to 3 calories per day.
