What are the benefits and disadvantages of ayurvedic approaches?
Ayurveda is the traditional healing system of India which dates back over 5000 years. The philosophy is complex, but like most traditional medical systems, it is based on balance in one's system. It teaches that in order to maintain wellness, we must maintain balance in every aspect of our lives such as work, rest, play, exercise, and food. Most traditional medical practices have not been subjected to hard science (ie: randomized controlled trials), so it is difficult to accurately discuss the advantages and disadvantages. That being said, anything which encourages balance in life, is likely to lead to a healthy state. I recommend reading Perfect Health, by Deepak Chopra for more information on Ayurvedic practice.
